SR 18-01: Resolution to Emphasize Involvement and Community Engagement

WHEREAS: Student Student is responsible for developing programming that is meant to connect Student Senate with the student body so that it can understand what concerns exist on campus.

WHEREAS: The Student Senate classes have traditionally held social events for their classes. The Student Senate Public Relations Committee has held various events throughout the Spring 2018 semester to promote Student Senate’s influence.

WHEREAS: The Student Senate is also responsible for connecting that campus to the local community which can be achieved through volunteering events.

WHEREAS: The Student Senate motto is “Service, Representation, Leadership,” however, Student Senate has not been taking part in volunteering events as a way of serving the campus and local community.

WHEREAS: Service can also be achieved by attending Student Senate events, and helping at the events.

WHEREAS: The Leadership Council has met and agreed that the passing of this resolution would increase Senator involvement and also connect Student Senate with members of the community.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: Student Senators, the Vice President, and the President will be required to volunteer three (3) community service hours for organizations that are preapproved by the Leadership Council per semester. All hours must be signed by a leading member of the organization.  

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: Student Senators, the Vice President, and the President will be required to participate in three (3) Student Senate sponsored events. These do not have to be events sponsored by the class or committee the senator is a member of. The chair sponsoring said event must confirm that the senator participated.

RESOLVED: Members of Student Senate are now required to complete three (3) community service hours and participate in three (3) Student Senate sponsored events per semester. Student Senators not elected for full semesters may receive a reduction of hours or events as approved by the Leadership Council.
